Learn About NAMI Greater OKC
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) began as a network of grassroots advocates. That spirit is alive and well in our organization. Our affiliate is an all volunteer group with a passion for helping others and improving the lives of those with serious mental illness.
Our affiliate is geographically defined by Oklahoma County. Because we are an active affiliate, we attract members from a wide attendance area.
The mission of NAMI Greater OKC is to provide help and hope to individuals and families affected by mental illness throughout Oklahoma County. This is accomplished in several ways. We offer regularly scheduled family support group meetings. We provide much needed education by offering regularly scheduled NAMI signature family education programs developed by NAMI National. We also organize and encourage volunteers for the purpose of advocacy. Priorities include serving on community coalitions, participating in legislative advocacy, and Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) booster activities.
Membership & Support Groups
Membership in NAMI is open to all. By joining an affiliate, members also join that state NAMI organization and the national organization. Membership is $40 per year per individual. There is also a $3 open door membership with the same privileges. It is not necessary to be a member to participate in any of the programs. However, membership is a requirement for volunteer and leadership positions.
Currently, we offer these NAMI signature programs:
Family Support Group lead by trained family members for family members.
Family-to-Family Education for loved ones of an adult affected by mental illness,
Connection support group for individuals living with a mental illness,
Homefront Education for military families, and
End the Silence
All of the programs and classes offered by our affiliate are provided free of charge.
We are governed by an executive board with 5 positions: president, first vice president, second vice president, treasurer, and secretary. We have various committee chairs. These include legislative advocacy, hospitality, Crisis Intervention Team trainer, and more.
We have no formal link with other agencies. We do regularly refer and communicate with other groups such as Heartline ( 2-1-1) and other mental health advocacy groups.
We are funded by individual donations, most of which are collected through our annual walk. We receive half of all donations designated to benefit our affiliate. This is our biggest source income. We are a 501(c)3. We do accept donations and will provide a tax receipt.
